Why Choose Industry-Academia Collaboration?
Industry-academia collaboration gives enterprises both academic-grade technical support and regulatory tax benefits, effectively reducing R&D costs. AISML serves as an enterprise’s external R&D center, filling the gap in theoretical foundations and academic rigor for mid-sized companies.
Full-Cycle Grants + Tax Savings
Front-End: Government Grants
Obtain R&D grants (non-repayable) through programs such as SBIR / CITD / SIIR to directly reduce R&D cash expenditure. Industry-academia collaboration status provides a significant scoring advantage during application review.
Back-End: R&D Tax Credits
Under Article 10 of the Statute for Industrial Innovation, R&D expenditures from industry-academia collaboration with universities qualify for up to a 15% corporate income tax credit. This means for every NT$1 million invested in R&D, you can save an additional NT$150,000 in taxes.

How is industry-academia collaboration different from regular outsourced R&D?▾
Industry-academia collaboration is a formal R&D program led by university professors with enterprise participation, subject to university review and a formal cooperation agreement. Unlike regular outsourcing, R&D expenditures under industry-academia collaboration qualify for investment tax credits under the Statute for Industrial Innovation. Additionally, such partnerships are viewed favorably when applying for government grants. The academic rigor provided by the university significantly enhances the technical credibility of the project.
How is the 15% R&D tax credit calculated?▾
Under Article 10 of the Statute for Industrial Innovation, enterprises may choose between two options: (1) deduct 15% of the current year’s R&D expenditure from the current year’s corporate income tax, or (2) deduct 10% of the previous three years’ R&D expenditure from the current year’s corporate income tax. For example, with an annual industry-academia collaboration expenditure of NT$2 million, option one yields a NT$300,000 tax credit. Combined with government grants, the net R&D cost can be reduced to less than half of the original investment.
Can SMEs engage in industry-academia collaboration with universities?▾
Absolutely. In fact, the government actively encourages SMEs to collaborate with universities. Multiple programs from the National Science and Technology Council and the Ministry of Economic Affairs include scoring bonuses for industry-academia partnerships. AISML is specifically positioned to serve as an external R&D center for mid-sized enterprises, bridging the gap in theoretical foundations and academic rigor, so that SMEs can access the same caliber of technical resources as large corporations.
What technology areas does AISML focus on for collaboration?▾
AISML focuses on three key areas: (1) AI Edge Computing, deploying AI models on edge devices for low-latency automated management; (2) 6G Secure Communications, security assurance research for next-generation communication nodes; (3) AI Governance & Cybersecurity Compliance, establishing enterprise AI governance frameworks based on ISO 42001/27001 management standards. All research outcomes are eligible for government grants and R&D tax credits.
